Global Survey of the MJO and Extreme Precipitation

This study examines the modulation of land-based extreme precipitation around globe by Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO). The upper-level convergent phase MJO inhibits events over most regions but enhancement in other phases falls three categories. Over Brazil, Southeast Asia, and Australia, 2-year rainfall are common near core divergence as expected. For tropics subtropics, occur along periphery MJO's envelope. Previous regional studies suggest these extremes driven low-level circulation either advecting moisture or interacting with orography rather than directly increasing vertical convection. Finally, extratropical more likely associated impact on wave trains tropical cyclones. Given skill numerical models for predicting MJO, results could lead to subseasonal forecasts events.
